Medaka Kurokami is a first year student at Hakoniwa Academy, she excels at everything she does. And now, she has become the Student council president.
She plans to solve all of the student body’s problems that are submitted to a suggestion box, now known as the “Medaka Box.” Medaka is a real dreamer, and she thinks she can solve anything, specially if she has his old childhood friend Zenkichi Hitoyoshi around.
Zenkichi admires Medaka, but at the same time he is troubled that she always drags him around without asking if he wants to join in her adventures. The Medaka Box has received a message; someone says a bunch of punks has taken control of the school’s dojo.
For Medaka it means action and she waits no longer to visit the dojo, there, she meets some memebers of the old kendo club. They are all bitter and don’t care if Medaka is the new Student Council president. They ask her to leave, but Medaka is more than a regular student, she is good in everything she does and quickly takes control of the dojo.
But Medaka doesn’t rely only in her strength; she is also good convincing them that there is a future ahead, and that they can be better if they want to. Zenkichi thinks that she is special, but at the same time he has a sense of envy around Medaka’s perfect personality.
The dojo recovers its members and they begin practicing, after all, they really want to beat up Medaka, who dared to punish them like no one did before.
Now, Medaka has to pick students to help her with her duties at the Student Council. But before that, a little girl, Hansode Shiranui tells Medaka that there is something strange with the first pledge she received.
At that moment, another student attacks Zenkichi and as he wakes up he finds knocked down inside the dojo, where all the members have been beaten by a first year student with a really bad attitude.
The dojo members stood up and confront the intruder, who starts talking dirt about Medaka. At that moment, Zenkichi understands what he has to do and finishes the fight with a big punch.
Medaka tells Zenkichi that she only needs him to run the Student Council, and Zenkichi agrees. After all, they are childhood friends who know each other perfectly.
Medaka Kurokami is extremely intelligent and can understand all her subjects well. She has a positive outlook on everyone and everything surrounding her. She became Hakoniwa Academy’s Student President as she managed to get 98% of the student body’s support. One of her pledges during her campaign was to set up a suggestion box, which later became known as the Medaka Box, along with her childhood friend Zenkichi, goes out to solve any and all problems that comes through.
Zenkichi Hitoyoshi is a childhood friend of Medaka. Reluctantly, he joins for the sake of protecting Medaka and he is assigned to become the Vice President. Zenkichi always shows enthusiasm toward Medaka’s cause for helping others and will punish anyone who opposes that cause. It is later revealed that he is the one who reformed Medaka into her current personality. He has been with Medaka since they were two years old.
Mogana Kikaijima is the Student Council Treasurer. She is originally the ace of the swim team, befriending Yakushima, the swim club’s captain, and Tanegashima, the swim club’s vice captain. All three had an incredible obsession with money for personal reasons and want to gain enough money to fill a pool and swim in it. When Kikaijima was a child, her father left because the family was in debt, and her mother became sick from working herself in to the ground.
Kouki Akune is the Student Council Secretary and the oldest member of the Student Council, as he is a second year while Medaka, Zenkichi, and Kikaijima are in the first year. Originally part of the judo club, Akune has been infatuated with Medaka since middle school and hates Zenkichi for being able to spend so much time with her.
Hansode Shiranui is the granddaughter of the Headmaster of Hakoniwa Academy. Zenkichi regards her as his best friend; he is apparently the only person who can get along with her and somewhat control her. She has a knack for finding clandestine information with ease, knowing about most things that would seem to be vague details, and is unusually perceptive.
