View Full Version : How much are you willing to pay for a good PC?

There has been a major debate with myself and a bunch of my friends about how much are they willing to spend on a good gaming rig.

They say, that $1500 - $2000 should be the right price for desktops/laptops to play most of the games, as well as some of the newer ones on a higher resolution than just average.

Now, when I brought up that I was willing to pay $3700 for a specific laptop (since I'm always on the go), there were mixed reactions about if that was too much or not.

The debate mostly was if I was eventually going to get myself a desktop. I answered "probably not if I'm going to buy this laptop; However, I will spend a little more money to get a plasma screen TV or an LCD TV -whichever is cheaper at the time- so I can hook my laptop up to the TV for home gaming, or movie watching."

Question is, how much are you willing to pay for a decent gaming rig?

Well... maybe i'd spend 3000 on a good desktop PC, but not a laptop, i use those just for work and i don't really need a powerful machine for that, not more than 800 for a laptop, at least 4me! :3:

It depends on what dns does on a regular basis... but I think it's always cheaper to upgrade desktops.

It is always cheaper to upgrade desktops, but since I'm constantly moving around, from place to place, I need a portable computer.
It's too hard to lug around a desktop xD

i too like portable computers but i wont spend more then what is needed on it. so about 1k is good enough i think, i dont like to play computers games but i like a fast computer with lots of memory.

lol...I have enough stuff to carry, not to add anything more.
I've already made up my mind that I'm going to buy this
laptop, so...=P

I'm not too familiar with laptop prices but I paid around $1500 for my PC in 2006. I would have been willing to pay a few hundred dollars more if I needed to (to play newer games and stuff).

I don't know what makes your particular laptop so good that it's worth paying more than double what my PC cost but you know more about computers than I do so I trust you if you say it's worth the price. One good thing about paying more for a better system now is that it won't get outdated as quickly.

$300 USD is the max I am willing to pay unless it have nano-tech. With the nano-tech development, I am willing to pay $500 max.

Nano-tech is actually progressing a hell of a lot quicker
than expected. Yamaha already has a nano-tech sea-doo
machine that you can fetch (for a bit of a price).

At least with the laptop, I can interchange the parts how
often I see fit....although with gas being on the rise...AGAIN,
I may have to put it off...AGAIN.

Well, I did some really indepth researching, and I found
a laptop with just about the same amount of power,
and 1/3 the price =3

Asus M70Sa:

=.= Why does it come with Vista 32-bit....

EOMs are such bakas... The first thing I would do, is format and install 64-bit OS. Since with it's current specs, that laptop will be able to access 2.5 ~ 2.75GB of RAM max (and not all 4GB)!!

Actually, 64-bit processors can use up to 8GB of RAM,
whereas Quad cores (128-bit technically) can use up
to 32GB of RAM (the Mac Pro currently have this option,
if you want to cough up a staggering $22K)

And for that, I'm formatting it, loading XP Pro 64-bit edition
as soon as I get it.

For an extra $200, I can have all of that, plus 4, 256MB
GDDR3 ATI Radeon HD 3600 series quad-linked using
CrossFire =P

But then again, I pay on par direct from warehouse pricing
for ALL of my computer needs (and some other fun
electronics).

....and I have my "get out of tax free" card xD

As for speakers, I'd get a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2
card, and hook up a Logitech Z-5500 5.1 Digital surround
sound speakers =P

I never mentioned anything about piracy.

who owns a copy as long as you have your own
CD Key.

I'm still a firm believer of XP. I hate Vista.

Agreed.

I think Windows Vista is completely horrible for anything but general use. I bought a new PC a few months ago and it came with Vista installed, I tried playing games on it, what a pain. I wish I had kept XP now and I'm considering getting it again, possibly a dual boot with XP/Vista (though I hear there are problems doing that in regard to the system restore feature).

>.< I'm just trying to get used to this new Vista thing... I also hate it... how... how can i edit a filename using the win explorer and avoiding program to sort automatically?

I have hundreds of files to rename, and everytime i rename one, it resorts everything and sends me to the new location... so i must go back and search the files i want to rename, which are at the top of the list >.>

So... next year Vista dies... will it be a better OS, or a huuuuge patch to this one?

=.= Are you for real??? x.x *pet pet pet* You are poor misinformed soul!! :P

Quad Cores are 64-bit architecture... there are currently no 128-bit general purpose CPU from either AMD nor Intel (and we are not due for one in a long time... but could actually require it in a decade or so due to other contrains).

While 32-bit can only access max of 4GB of virtual memory space, 64-bit can access 4 billion times as much. So with 64-bit processors the sky is the limit. But currently, most OS limit RAM to max of 128GB (not that you can actually get that far).

The reason why right now most normal PCs can only access 8GB max is due to chipset limitations and the fact that there is only 4 memory slots on the motherboards, and mainstream memory stick size goes up to 2GB... 4 x 2GB == 8GB

If you buy workstation motherboards (with Intel XEON processors, which are still 64-bit), those motherboards have more memory slots and can go as far as 32GB and even 64GB.

And for that, I'm formatting it, loading XP Pro 64-bit edition
as soon as I get it.

Ppfff... WinXP 64-bit... that's just Windows 2003 64-bit with themes enabled. If you installing Server, go for 2008 ^.^

Triple Post! *Gives Vexy a swirly*

Anyways: Yes, there are NO 128-bit systems, and the
Mac Pro is a 64-bit system. But the way it's designed, could
entail that 128-bits are coming (sooner than a decade...
possibly in 5 years).

But the fully pumped up Mac Pro does cost 22K+

LOL the one right next to the quote button, you press that one to every post you want to quote, then in the last one you press the quote button to go write your message.

That function has been available for a year or so. :D

I would have to say:
YOU FAIL =P

Anyways, speaking of computers, I was looking around
on some forums, and somebody was asking "What kind
of mp3 player should I get?"

So of course, I suggested my trusty Creative Zen =P

Now, a moderator came around, and suggested something
else, called "Cowon". I took a look into this, and they
actually have a touch screen mp3 player with an actual
desktop GUI!

I was planning on building a stereo system in my car
with a touch screen computer, so not only can I
play movies, but play music as well (with some modifications,
such as a 1000W amp =P)

Then he suggested something else to me, which absolutely
blew me away...

Cowon Q5W (http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/cowon/q5w/)

I was actually very impressed with this little system, albeit
it being slightly on the expensive side: this 5" touch screen
with such brilliance, yet sexy design (slim!), I could actually
modify this a little, and still have room left for 2 external
hard drives, and possibly 2 Maglev fans (considering the stock
stereo system in my console is quite large)!

This would actually save me around $700 from computer
equipment if I went around actually constructing the system.

My original idea was getting a Mac mini, building a touch
screen myself, and hooking up the special wires.
