    Skull Shikabane Hime: Aka (2008)

Sixteen year old Ohri Kagami is moving away from a small orphanage to start his life on his own. The orphanage happens to be associated with a temple that has a secret society of monks who fight the undead. And that secret society of monks has a secret weapon, fifteen year old Makina Hoshimura, who happens to be undead herself, but is fighting to gain her pass into heaven.

On the day of Ohri's departure the monks and Makina go after a newly discovered undead being who is killing women and the police who chase him. Makina catches up to the evil undead being, who transforms into a vampire who attempts to bite and enslave Makina too.

Makina carries a pair of compact submachine guns that she uses to try to blast the vampire into bits. But Makina is distracted by the revival of some of the vampire's victims and so is carried off into the night in the talons of the monster.

Ohri has secretly seen the leader of the monks, Keisei Tagami, revive Makina by hugging her, so on the night of Ohri's departure, when Makina breaks free of the grip of the vampire and smashes into the ground in front of him, Ohri revives Makina by hugging her too. Makina is surprised when she finds that Ohri revived her, and promptly slaps him in the face before running off to rejoin Keisei and the chase.

Eventually Makina catches up with the vampire and finally succeeds in blowing him up so that he can't be revived. Afterwards, while Makina cleans herself off in her shower, Ohri finally reaches his new apartment, only to find that his classmates who were planning a welcoming party all fell asleep before he arrived.

    Main Characters

Makina Hoshimura is the main character and a contracted "living corpse". She is tasked with killing 108 corpses to gain entrance to heaven. She has formidable physical skills and her weapon of choice is an Ingram MAC11 machine gun. Her contractor priest is Keisei Tagami.

Ohri Kagami is a normal high school boy who was raised at Keisei Tagami's temple. He treats Keisei as his brother even though they are not blood related. He also coincidentally appears at several points where corpses appear and the reason of this is unknown. He has also been nicknamed by the children at the temple "Hanagami".

Keisei Tagami is a Buddhist priest of Kongon Clan, he adopts Ohri Kagami from an orphanage. More at: Wiki Thanks to: D. Baranyi

I started watching this recently (only two episode so far). Horror/supernatural isn't my favorite genre but I'm giving this series a chance because I like Gainax. It's hard to judge a series after two episodes so I won't give a review this time.

  3. Awwww... why is she using submachine gun...? B.F.S. would have been so much better!!! And where are the bullets coming from? Is it reload "on the bounce" like in Grenadier: Hohoemi no Senshi???

She reminds me of Alucard, who usually uses human weapons. I haven't seen much of it, so hopefully she has more original abilities.

Hmm... it is different. Hellsing is really different from the common anime series.

Strong characters are interesting, I think I'll follow the whole series

hmmm I probably prefer Hellsing, because Alucard seems stronger. Plot-wise I don't remember much, it's been years since I watched Hellsing. But like 4m said, they are a bit different.

Hellsing and Shikabane aren't really the same type of show though. Same genre, maybe, but with a totally different feel. Makina isn't a super-powered character like Alucard. When watching Hellsing, you get the feeling that Alucard can't be beaten. You don't get that feeling when watching Shikabane.

What made Hellsing a good show wasn't necessarily its plot, it was the interesting characters. The characters in Shikabane don't seem quite as interesting but it has an interesting story--so far, at least.
