In the past month or so, I been satisfying my "mmo sweet tooth" by playing Champions Online. While there are (as always) a lot of critiques out there that may say that CO may not be worth anybody's time, I beg to differ and say that none of the currently existing MMOs are worth anybody's times. Let's face it, the last MMO that was worth anybody's time was World of Warcraft, and it is already an ancient relic. While CO was a wreck when it came out a year ago, Cryptic (the developers) did spend their time getting the game on its feet. But I digress...
So here I am, in the world of Champions, think of what character to make... and eureka!
She is a soviet era, special (and secret) super agent... cat girl!? More or less... Mind you, this is version 5.0 or something of her. I started with slightly different costume, and refined it over the course of my adventures.
I began my adventures in the Nevada desert, I think I believe it is a Nevada desert. Apparently US have tested too many nukes in the '50s, and the whole place is filled with zombies. As I mowed through a couple of legions of zombies and got my feet of the ground (by learning how to fly), the charms of CO grew on me. In its core, it is a simple game: go from A to B, shoot/slash, collect, return with whatever you been tasked to retrieve... quests... pvp... the usual formula. However, as I journeyed, the chance to meet a totally unique superhero or witness funny and hilarious easter eggs hidden all over game became the reward in itself, as it should be for any comic book fanatic.
This game truly is for casual gamers. There are no set roles, you can learn and unlearn your abilities (for a small fee), and rebuild your character (from costumes to abilities) every day, provided you have "gold" to do so. There is game shop, but I found it to be totally pointless. Overall, CO is a welcomed change from grind-fest that are Asian MMOs (I'm looking at your Lineage2!). My only wish is that Cryptic (the developers) would spend a little bit more energy on polishing and finalizing the games that they produce. But who am I to complain!
