Thread: External Storage...

  1. External Storage...

So I was thinking about getting external hdd to store my ever growing collection of anime...

I first looked at External HDDs, and was primary looking at the ones with big capacity. But then remembered about Ethernet External HDD.

Ethernet External HDD are External HDD that can be connected to via LAN instead of USB or Firewire. Good thing about this is that Ethernet External HDD doesn't need to be connected to any PC, and simple connect to your LAN switch or router.

I also want my solution to be fairly upgradable... and I am not talking about buying new unit every 2 years, but doing periodic small updates to it.

That's why I begun looking more at Ethernet External Enclosures that didn't came with any HDD, and where I could buy HDD myself.

Then I decided that why go through all this trouble, and instead try out for a Barebone system.

Anybody has any experience with Barebone systems?

Everything looks managetable.. One question through.. do I have to install the CPU? The shuttle models all have heatpipes for cooling...

I think some barebone systems doesn't require a cpu at all.

    Here is a comparison

I have no idea what i am looking at. What is the storage capacity of the ethernet HDD?

The only thing i can say to you, LV, is burn your ever growing anime on to the DVD as data.

That what I am currently doing, but DVDs are not enternal. They deteriote after a while... And so, once very 10 years I will need to re-burn the data to a different disk (Not to mention that in 20 years the DVD maybe obselete. Just look at the floppy disk). With HHDs, I can actually move the data from one HHD to another...

The ethernet HDD, is not really a HDD. It is an ethernet capable enclosure for HDD. You put any HDD into it, and that HDD can be seen on your LAN network as a stand alone device.

    I see, you're very intelligent

Wouldn't it be cheaper just to store it to the external HDD and hook it up to your PC/Laptop? You can still share it on the network. Just think of it as a network drive.

I'm leaning toward the barebone system that I store next to the "soon to be purchased" HD LCD TV. That way I could also store anime on that system, and watch it on TV from the comfort of my couch

I can then chat with 4mew on that TV also...

hum.... using the TV screen as your monitor. It's a good idea but it wouldn't be good. The pixels are too big. Believe it or not, the computer screen has a better resolution than the TV.

It's nice that you can still chat with 4mew. I don't chat online anymore and 4mew doesn't know that.

Not if it's a LCD screen...
